I'm not really sure whether it is true or not. But there are a lot of theories about it. Including the Mayan (sp?) Calender ended on that day and such and such.
I think Khalora might know more about it, but he will probably make up heaps of stuff on the spot.

I'm not making it up, everything that I'm telling you now, feel free to rebut and agree at will, I haven't proven or denied any of them, so feel free to make note of them.
There's several reason why people believe we will die then...
1) A star approxiametly 7.5 light years away from us is at a red giant stage, it has also been due to supernova for the last 30, 000 years. Some scientists believe that the radiation of a supernova at such close distances would fry the Earth to cinders and would last for 30 days. These scientists further move to say that the radiation will hit us at some stage in late 2012. NB: There is a star out there that is due to supernova, all astrologists agree on that, but most believe that it could supernova any time within the next 100,000 years. Theres no proof that it will hit us on 2012)
2) In France (I think) a 27km underground tube in the shape of a circle is being constructed for the sole purpose of firing two atoms at each other at near light speed, just to see what would happen and conduct some experiments. Some scientists believe that a collision of this nature would cause a massive gravitational implosion about the size of a basketball, that could potentially form like a mini black hole and suck the Earth into it over a long time. Others believe that it will simply a large nuclear explosion... It will become operational in December 2012.
3) Some microscopic robots are in construction at the moment, for the job of doing small jobs such as brain surgery, or constructions. The idea is to make them self-breeding so that just one can be put in a brain, and it will reproduce to help fix whatever problem it may be. Some people believe that if the programming was to fail, they would copy themselves at an uncontrolable rate and would cover the Earth in themselves within a couple of months. This technology hits the markets in 2012.
4) A super large volcano in Asia (I think) has been studied and has been found to erupt on a circular basis every 750,000 years. We are now 10,000 years overdue. Some scientist believe that the pressure is builiding up and that it will erupt in late 2012. The eruption would spew ash and coal into the atmosphere, smothering the sun's energy and blanketing the world in another brief Ice age. NB: This has happened before in the past (proven), so it stands true that it could happen again...
5) The Mayans, a civilization that dates back thousands of years ago (they built a heap of shrines around China and Asia) once estimated how long each moon orbit would last, keeping in mind that this was tens of thousands of years ago... they were three seconds off. They also used this information to correctly measure tides and also got the Earth's orbit very close to excat as well. In addition, they predicted that the Earth and time was of a cyclic nature, and that after twelve rotations of the galatic centre, mass would retreat back and another Big Bang would occur, thereby time starting over again. They predicted that this would occur at exactly December 21, 2012...
6) The sun is in a period of core stability at the moment, and it has been for the past so many millions of years. But we all know that stars act in a cyclic nature and that every so many years they experience a massive internal chemical switch that lasts a couple of thousand years and sometimes results in them changing state eg. protostar to yellow star, yellow star to red giant, red giant to blue giant etc. etc. Some scientists believe that this chemical switch of our own sun will begin in late 2012, and will continue for just under a million years, by the end of which we will all be toasted to nothing and the supreme heat and radiation will have shattered the earth into millions of asteroids and blackened Pluto to the state of Mercury...
7) There was ten reasons I think... but I can't think of the last three... I'll post them up if I remember them...
So... what do you believe?

1) Then wouldn't it take more than 30 000 years for the radiation to hit us? It takes a long time for that stuff to travel through space.
2) It couldn't possibly form a nuclear explosion. Maybe an atomic one.
3) I haven't heard anything about that. You think there would be more talk about something like that in the works wouldn't you?
4) An Ice Age wouldn't make an apolcalypse. It would just force us to make some major adjustments (understatement).
5. I don't think what you just said is true. The only reason people bring up the Mayan calender is because it ends on December 21 2012. They knew nothing about 'Big Bangs'. That theory didn't come about till far later on in the history of humanity.
6) Once again, I think I would have heard that somewhere.

And here comes my rebuttal... don't you love debating... I sure don't 1) Radiation is a wavelength of light, light travels at light speed, and light years are a measure of distance, not time. Therefore, radiation travelling at light speed would take 7.5 years to rach us after the explosion. Kind of like, if you can see the flash, its already too late. 2) Nuclear and atomic are the same thing numbnuts! Haha Nuclear (or atomic) bombs work by firing atoms against each other at about 3300 km/h. Think of the explosion that is caused by that, now think of the explosion that could be caused if they were moving at light speed, which is 300,000,000 metres per second (83,333,333 km/h) 3) Meh, probably... I don't believe this one anyway... 4) No argument there... Humans survived the last ice age... 5) They didn't know about a 'Big Bang' per say, they just said a massive shift in our consciousness, which we later referred to as the the 'Big Bang' because that is our theory of the universe. 6) The sun is in a cyclic nature, that I can assure you, and it will go reactive sooner or later, its just a question of whether the human race will still be around for it or not...

Geez...
I'm not so worried about the microscopic one, because even if it were to happen, we as humans, would probably be able to destroy them and I'm not sure just how... intelligent they would be to really do anything. But, I don't believe that theory much, anyway. ^^
As for the others... I just did astronomy, but we hadn't worked very much on it, so I'm not going to be very debatable with any of those, but maybe I will later when I'm willing to research. =P
I think the most likely one would be #4. I can't really explain why I think that (too early. >.<) but, yeah. I will later.

Yeah, but #4 wouldn't actually destroy earth, just give us all a run for our money...
I need to think of the others! Argh Alessio, THINK!!

Haha, that's true... O! I did research! The second is not... impossible. From what I found at least. O.o To make a black hole, neutrinos are needed... neutrinos are generated whenever neutrons change into protons, or vice versa. Neutrons and Protons are both part of the atomic structure, so, if the collision somehow changed those two partcles, then a black hole could, indeed form...
But I don't know how likely that is. O.o I just tried my fair share for the moment. ^^

Neutrons and protons are both contained within the nucelus, so both atoms would need to be of the same material eg. 2 hydrogen atoms, just to keep the composition and chemical weight the same. Maybe at such high speeds the nucleus could become more malleable. We don't know what happens when something exceeds light speed, and maybe we might find out... Don't get me wrong, a lot of these ideas are pretty far-fetched, and I'm betting that there's a 99% chance that none of it will happen... but you never know, besides, I'd like to live beyond my 30th birthday

I don't believe any of it. It's like when Christians run about screaming about doomsday and judgement...so you'd better head of the church and give a donation.
Caching Christianity.
Okay, atheist streak done.
Moving right along, I have never heard any of these mentioned before. You'd think they would have been spoken about somewhere. The only one I have ever heard about is the Mayan Calender. And that is basically just when their calander ended, not a "ZOMG FUTURE PPL!!11! UR GONNA B PWNED!!!!!11!!1!" type statement.

Yeah... stupid atheiests... I'm agnostic...
You've never heard of the 27km tube? Its all over SBS... But we never watch it so yeah...

Ohh, I haven't heard about the 27km tube...
Hehe, SBS. lol. Our news station, the one I watch the most at least, is Fox. =P

Hmm... I thought that it was kind of general knowledge type stuff... maybe I was wrong, meh... But yeah, I say that we wait until the 21st of December 2012, and when we wake up on the 22nd, then we can all turn around and go, "Hah! Take that you stupid, dirty Mayans!!"
