Serafina looked at the parchment in her hand and read over it once again, repeating her instructions in her head. Find treasures in the cave of the Isle of Emeralds, and bring back as many jewels as you can find... Also, I have heard a rumor from Ice that there is something very special in the cave, something very rare. I want you to venture for that and find it for me. The Empress, Cailen. Serafina tied her small boat provided from the Fallen Angels and tied it to a tree. The sun's rays beat down on her and she gracefully walked across the beach, the sand sinking beneath her feet. She had gone to the Isle of Emeralds quite a few times, having the urge to gain some extra money. But never has she ventured too far inside the cave that she was very used to.
She stood at the mouth and stared inside, engulfing the darkness like a hungry shark. She did not fear dark, as her eyes adjusted and she stepped inside. A harsh wall of cold air slammed against her body, the weather inside the cave much different from that of the beach. She placed her hand against the cold, stone wall of the cave and continued forward, now with a little more guidance. She heard a small drop of water land on the ground, as she stepped in a puddle but quickly passed through without noticing the eerie sound. She was curious as to what Ice may have been talking of, and she let her imagination wander.
A valuable jewel, maybe as large as a horse, could have been hidden far in the cave. Ancient and old, this jewel might even possess more than just financial value, but even some type of magical ability. Maybe it could grant wishes, or provide you with invincibility. Invisibility, the power to produce the elements on your own, or something even more magical! Maybe if you touched it, you would be able to do anything, and everything, you wanted to do. The possibilities seemed endless, as Serafina thought about this jewel. However, if it were not a jewel, what could it be?
Obviously it was something that everybody would want, and money was a very valuable source in their world, if you had money, you were very lucky... but money could be obtained by the jewels, so to Serafina, it seemed to be something of much more appraisal than simply that. However, she could not come to any other conclusion. The darkness of the cave had gotten eerier, as Serafina walked deeper into the cave than she had ever gone. She felt a presence near by, but knew that nobody could be following her, she would have caught them by this point. She stared into the darkness and stopped when she realized that she could no longer see anything. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, opening them again but, still, she cold see nothing.
Walking forward, she felt something tickle her hand. She jumped away and heard a faint slither, and a light cracking sound. As it faded away, she knew that she was not alone: she may have been the only human-like creature, but there was no doubt in her mind that other species were living in the cave as well. As she continued forward, this time without the guidance of of the cave's walls, her heart beat faster when she heard a strange echo of something falling. Something is here... she thought to herself. She ran forward when she suddenly felt herself falling.
Screaming, she stretched her arms and legs onto the small walls of the tunnel as she tried to slow down her speed, but she was going down at a 90 degree angle, and the walls were slippery and wet. A sudden flash of light emerged before her eyes when she felt herself land on something that cracked beneath her. She quickly jumped to her feet and realized that she was covered in something gooey, and purple. She narrowed her eyes in disgust and wiped her hands on the ground. "What is this room...?" she said out loud. She heard a crack beneath her feet. Looking down, she picked up what she had stepped on and it looked like a shell of an egg, with the purple goo seeping from it.
She felt around on the ground and found pieces of sticks and easily enough, as well as two rocks. Rubbing the two rocks together, for what seemed like an hour, she finally started a fire and the small room lit up. Her eyes grew wide at the sight before her and she leaned her back against the stone wall, staring at the ground. Large stones were in a circle, and branches and pieces of straw were inside. A nest, it appeared... and there were eggs in them. You killed whatever were in those eggs, Serafina... She thought to herself in slight horror. She kneeled on the ground before one of the eggs that she did not land on.
It glistened in the fire, a beautiful shade of red and orange emitting from it. She noticed that the egg was large, the size of her head. Her fingers twitched, an urge to touch the magnificent thing before her. She quickly took off her black leather gloves and reached out to the egg with her right hand, slowly. Her fingertips almost touched the egg when she felt a shock go through her body. Swiftly pulling away from the nest, she held her hand as it surged with pain, it felt as if it were on fire. She hadn't touched the egg yet, and it had already "attacked" her. She grit her teeth and gave another attempt, this time ignoring the burning sensation. She touched the egg and the pain disappeared, and rather, she felt lighter. The fire grew and the cave was devolved into light.
The egg had changed from the color of fire to a dull color of gray with black specks upon it. With both hands, she picked up the large, heavy egg and gazed at it in admiration. "What a beautiful egg..." Suddenly, she heard Cailen's voice echo in her ears, "You are to give that to me, Serafina.... that belongs to me, not you. Remember, you are on a duty for the Fallen Angels... come and give it to the Empress, who it really belongs to. Or do you dare steal from your leader?"
Serafina looked around, as if she was making sure no one was watching her, and she looked at the egg again. She ran her hand across it. It was rough, growing with warmth the longer she held it. She felt a flutter of anger. She did not want to give this to her Empress, even though that would be disobedience. But, she felt that this belonged to her, and it was her's only. She would be the only person who could benefit from this egg. She pushed it to her ear, expecting to hear something, but there was no sound. She sighed and continued to examine the egg. She had decided, it would be hers'. She put it on the ground and sat before it. "Let's see if you are worth anything..."
